Made on Ubuntu

9/08/2009

In the Mac iLife suite there’s a web page builder application that many Mac users seem to be using to create their personal websites. Being that this is an evil Apple application, the program automatically slaps a badge saying “Made on a Mac” on the footer, as to advertise to the world that any moron can create a website with a Mac.

A member at Ubuntu forums had noticed this, and put forth the idea that Ubuntu users should get a similar badge to display on their websites - that is, if they made it on Ubuntu. I kind of liked the idea, even though it might be seen as slightly unfair to Linux users who are using other distributions -  but on the other hand, the only people who would click on such a badge are people who don’t already know what Ubuntu is. In other words, Mac or Windows users.

So I sat down and created some badges…

Mac and Ubuntu badges

Fast forward a few hours, and not only had I made 4 awesome looking badges, but I had also created a pretty neat website to hold them all!

If you have created a website on Ubuntu, go get one of the badges!

Update to the puzzle concept contest

30/07/2009

A couple of days ago, I announced that I would be giving away the entire Penumbra trilogy for Linux as a prize for winning my puzzle concept contest. After having been in contact with the author of the games, they have graciously decided to let me trade in my code for the Linux versions if the winner of the competition would rather have the games for Mac. Sadly I can’t give away the Windows versions.

The competition is still going, so if you enter now, you have a pretty good chance of winning this great series of games. For more information on how to enter, go check out my announcement post.

Things I miss when not in Linux

27/06/2009

I try very hard not to come off as a Linux zealot. I do recognize that it has a lot of flaws and functionality yet to be implemented. However, in my opinion its positive sides far outweighs its negatives, and that’s why I use it as my primary system.

But it’s not the only platform I use. While I don’t have any dedicated Windows boxes anymore, I still have at least one dual boot system for those applications or games that I want to use - just not every day. Right now I even have an iMac that I use every now and then (I do not own it, however).

Whenever I use those systems, there are some things that make me think “Why doesn’t Linux have this?”. Things like Time Machine, for example. But more times than not, I get extremely irritated over tiny things that Linux does, but the other platforms don’t.

Contained within this post is a short list of little Linux things that I miss whenever I’m not using Linux. I’m not going to include big things like being able to install software from repositories, or anything like that. Just the tiny things that I can’t stand not being able to use.
