Tiny update: New icons for Caffeine

4/05/2010

I’m sure a lot of you have updated or soon will be updating to Ubuntu 10.04. With this new release the default theme has changed from the old Human theme to the new Ambiance theme, and along with that the default icon theme has changed to ubuntu_mono_dark, which gives your indicator applets a really sleek look. Sadly, Caffeine doesn’t really blend in all that well with those nice monochrome icons.

Caffeine's old look

That’s why I have gone ahead and created two sets of new icons to be used with the two new themes included with Ubuntu 10.04! These new icons look a whole lot better.

Ambience Caffeine icons

Caffeine…?

In case you haven’t been following this blog, Caffeine is a tiny little applet that sits in your system tray and uses the magic of caffeine to keep your computer from going asleep or activating the screensaver.

Installation

To use them, all you have to do is save the tarball in the link below, untar it and move the icons you want to /usr/share/caffeine/images/ I suggest that you first make a backup of the old icons, in case you change your mind.

#This example assumes you downloaded the tarball to your desktop, and that you want the ambience icons
tar -zxvf Caffeine-icons.tar.gz
sudo mv /usr/share/caffeine/images/Full_Cup.svg /usr/share/caffeine/images/Full_Cup_old.svg
sudo mv /usr/share/caffeine/images/Empty_Cup.svg /usr/share/caffeine/images/Empty_Cup_old.svg
sudo mv ~/Desktop/ubuntu_mono_dark/Full_Cup.svg /usr/share/caffeine/images/Full_Cup.svg
sudo mv ~/Desktop/ubuntu_mono_dark/Empty_Cup.svg /usr/share/caffeine/images/Empty_Cup.svg

Download

The Caffeine icons are available to download from Dropbox.

Please do let me know what you think. The SVGs should be editable from within Inkscape, so feel free to make modifications if you want to.

In case you were wondering, the next version of Caffeine will have these icons included by default, so that they are automatically used if you’re using Ambiance or Radiance. I have my midget coder slaves working on it right now.

Yeah, I do that from time to time.

Maybe I should update my post to say what Caffeine is, for those who haven’t been following my blog for very long…

Brilliant icons! Getting them as soon as I’m on my PC, but even MORE important, I must know what wicked/awesome desktop background you have hinted to in your screenshot… The colours are purdy…

It’s a wallpaper by designer Patrick Gunderson. I’m not sure where I first found it, but here it is in 1440×900.
